Commercialism of Christmas

The holidays are becoming more and more commercialized in modern times than ever before. This is especially true for a holiday celebrated by a majority of Americns, Christmas. It seems that people now care more about selling products and making money than the true spirit of the holidays. To most, Christmas has become entirely about material possessions. How does everyone feel about this? Do you think that it is good or bad for society and the economy?

  1. I think that this is bad for the economy, because not everybody can afford what people want these days. I don't really understand why people just don't stop and think of the true meaning of Christmas, which is pretty much to be with your family and spend time with them. Also, I think that people are being too greedy these days...

  3. Well, with the economy in shambles, it is very hard for people who have their own businesses to survive. For them it is all about selling the most products so that they can keep their business afloat and celebrate the holiday season how it is supposed to be spent. Materialistic things are all that most kids see Christmas as which is understandable. They are too young to understand that it isn’t all about the gifts. Sometimes those gifts do bring the family closer together. If you weren’t with family, you couldn’t really give gifts to people and get them in return. A lot of the times, people are buying stuff for families in need and children that won’t get as many presents under the tree. Everyone isn’t always thinking about themselves this season. There is still some good in the world.

  4. I feel that, yes this time of year is crazy and exspensive. And yes, many stores do want to sell alot more, but thats just because its the time of season to shop for gifts. But i also see where the true spirit of Christmas comes in. Even though presents are great, money is very tight for some families. I don't think this is all that great for society because of the money. Some people just don't celebrate Christmas because of the cost. But if things were to be better in society then sure go for it.

  5. The commercialism of Christmas is a bad thing for society. It has taken away greatly from the true meaning of Christmas. So much so that some people would not even be able to tell you what the true meaning is. Now, Christmas is all about spending money and getting presents. Christmas is just contributing to creating an even more materialistic society.

  6. Even with a ‘good’ economy Christmas is commercialized and all about presents and I can’t say it’s any surprise. Kids are told by the media, peers and sometimes their family that if they don’t have the latest and greatest of everything out they won’t have as many friends or they won’t be as successful. With all this pressure more and more people have forgotten about the true meaning of the holidays which is truly sad, kids more so than others can’t enjoy the holidays if they don’t get everything they wrote on their list plus more and I think if it wasn’t for this bad economy than the true meaning of Christmas would be lost forever. The economy is forcing most parents (the ones who are realistic) to scale back and show the family that there is still fun without a ton of presents and be grateful that they still have there house family and health which I think is going to help society more than anything.
